Top 10 Most Unclassifiable Metal Bands

Anathema
They were pretty Doomy and also kinda Deathy back in the day. Now they're not really much of either… Are they even metal at all anymore? Or just rock?

Children of Bodom
A majority of metalheads would probably call them pioneers of the Finnish Extreme Power Metal sound, while some would label them as Thrash Metal (especially their more recent material). Some would even associate their earlier material with Black Metal, mostly due to the vocals. What subgenre do you think Bodom fit into?

Cradle of Filth
The band's original intention seemed to be Symphonic Black Metal, but somewhere along the line they strayed quite far from accepted Black Metal conventions. Some would say they never even met them to begin with, and would call them Extreme Gothic Metal. Which of the two do you think they best match?

Dissection
Dissection are from Sweden, a country most closely associated with Melodic Death Metal, but certainly do not fit into the Gothenburg mold. Many would say that they are, in fact, a Black Metal band. Which of the two do you think they should be called? Or do you think they should be called Blackened Death Metal?

Katatonia
They've always been hard to place, and have changed their sound so radically over the years. Death? Doom? Black? Gothic? Alternative Rock? What the heck are they at heart?

Lamb of God
Some would call them Thrash Metal, while some consider them direct descendants of Pantera's Groove Metal sound. A few naysayers would also list them under Metalcore, most likely for their affinity for breakdowns. What would you call them?

Meshuggah
Meshuggah are obviously not your typical Death Metal band. Their bizarrely syncopated rhythms certainly don't fit the cookie cutter Death Metal sound. What would you call a band like Meshuggah?

Symphony X
Are they a Power Metal band, or just straight-up Prog Metal? Symphonic Metal maybe? Cheese Metal?

Type O Negative
Man, these Thrashy Doomy Gothic Industrial bands are all so all over the map. Can't they pick a genre and stick with it?

Tool
Are they Alternative Metal? Avant-Garde Metal? They couldn't possibly be Nu Metal could they? Are they even metal at all?
